VEGA TO RELEASE THEIR STEREO MESSIAH ON FRONTIERS:
Frontiers Records is pleased to welcome back to the label British Melodic Rockers Vega who plan to release their third album “Stereo Messiah” in the fall of 2014.

“It is a pleasure to be part again of the best label in the world!” said James Martin keyboardist and co-songwriter of the band. The recordings are almost completed and the band is currently putting the finishing touches to the album which can certainly be enlisted as one of the Melodic Rock highlights of the second part of the year. “Stereo Messiah” has been produced by John Mitchell and will be mastered in June by Harry Hess of Harem Scarem. It will also see Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott appear on a duet with singer Nick Workman on a rare Def Leppard song given to Vega by the Sheffield front man himself! “It’s a clichй to say this, but it really is a dream come true for us. Leppard are a massive influence on us. This is such an honour!” said Nick.

Vega have also finalized already the first batch of UK shows. More dates will follow in the rest of Europe and UK in the following months:
November 1st: Nottingham Rescue Rooms
November 6th: Bolton Railway
November 7th: Swansea Static

NEW REVIEWS ONLINE:
New Reviews added to the site today – the LAST batch before the launch of the new MR website!
Online today are reviews for: California Breed, Neal Schon, Timo Tolkki, Seven, Diesel, SunStrike, Mother Road, Alien, Dynazty and Brother FiretribeCheck them out now.

Today’s reviews reflect a few things. First – there’s a lot of great releases around. Plenty to pick and choose from for all!
Secondly, with the development of the new MR website, I haven’t had much time to devote to reviews as is needed, so what I’m reviewing right now are the main titles around right now – and as far as those – they are mostly very consistent and of high quality. The ratings have been high all year – because of the quality with mainline releases and the fact I haven’t had time to get to the secondary releases which may not obtain such high praise and help average out the scores, but equally deserving of coverage.

Which leads to my final point – the increased consistency and quality of releases is leading the reviews to tend higher and if I keep going we’ll need a 110 rating soon enough.

So with today’s reviews, say goodbye to the old MR site and stand by for the new. The new design allows me a whole lot more flexibility to add reviews one at a time, instead of painfully working up a batch and HTML’ing them to add in one go. That means more reviews, less constraints over what titles and the length of reviews (long if I want, short if I want…) and a slight tweak to the ratings system.

I have grappled with this for months, but decided that to do anything completely different would throw 16 years of past reviews into disarray, so the % system will stay and I’ll continue to talk about the details within each release in as much detail as necessary, but at the same time, there is one additional rank being added within the current 0-100 system, plus I have tweaked the descriptions each color rank uses. On top of that, you can expect me to be tougher on scores and a general depreciation in overall marks (just slightly), as this will allow greater scope to point out truly outstanding releases, focus on the good records and allow room to grow once again.

80 is the new 90 🙂

I’m looking forward to getting the new site launched….I hope the new layout and system makes sense and is as popular as the reviews here have been over the years. Once the new site is launched I will begin the slow process of cataloguing all past years’ worth of reviews into one mega-searchable database at the new site!
Thanks for the support and awesome feedback over that time.

BRITISH MELODIC ROCKERS SERPENTINE RETURN:
Press Release: “We are delighted to announce that after twelve months in the proverbial wilderness, Serpentine are back!
After parting ways with our former singer Matt Black last year, and with our beloved bassist and founder member Gareth Vanstone bowing out in early 2014 due to health issues, it is with extreme pleasure that we welcome two new recruits to the band who represent the cream of the South Wales rock scene. Vocal powerhouse Adam Payne (ex-Tidal) was identified almost immediately upon Matt’s departure as the voice to represent the new era of Serpentine, and is joined by bassist Owen Crawford whose work on former band Triaxis’ ‘Rage & Retribution’ album is beyond impressive.
You may have gathered by now from our Facebook posts that work in the studio on our yet-to-be-titled third record, which is being produced and co-written by Gary Hughes (Ten), is well underway. The sessions so far have been great and we are more than confident that the songs we’ve chosen represent our best work to date. With that in mind, we are also very excited and honoured to have landed the services of Neil Kernon (Queensryche, FM, Judas Priest, Autograph) to mix the album this summer, which promises to have a harder and darker edge than previous releases.
More details will be available in a full press release, which will be out at the beginning of next week. In the meantime we hope that you will all join us in welcoming two class acts into Serpentine. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your continued support while we’ve been away. Now we’re back, and you’re gonna know about it!!”

PAUL DEAN’S PRE-LOVERBOY BAND STREETHEART RELEASES 1993 LIVE REUNION ALBUM:
One Night One Take features Dean, Matt Frenette and Ken “Spider” Sinnaeve reuniting with Kenny Shields and Daryl Gutheil

New York, May 23, 2014–Long before they became full-time members of Loverboy, guitarist Paul Dean, bassist Ken “Spider” Sinnaeve and drummer Matt Frenette were members of another legendary Canadian band, Streetheart. Long gathering dust in Dean’s archives, One Night One Take finally sees the light of day, a live recording made at Winnipeg’s Rolling Stone Cabaret on Friday, August 13, 1993, part of a week-long stint marking the band’s reunion after Dean was “dumped” 15 years before.

One Night, One Take shows off a band where chops, musicianship and communication resulted in an almost 14-minute-long cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Under My Thumb” and a fiery version of Them’s Bert Berns-penned classic, “Here Comes the Night,” both spotlighting Dean’s intense guitar-playing. Sinnaeve’s virtuoso bass and Frenette’s frenetic drumming are showcased on one of the previously unreleased tracks, “Mr. Tall”, while the other new track, “Losin’ Streak”, features vocalist Kenny Shields and keyboardist/vocalist Daryl Gutheil. Also, check out Dean’s electric violin solo on “Move On Over,” where Shields playfully dubs him Paul “Charlie Daniels” Dean, or his guitar pyrotechnics in “Can You Feel It” for further proof of Streetheart’s legendary jamming prowess. “At rehearsal, I said to myself, how the heck am I gonna pull that off – did I actually play that?” laughs Dean today. Their musical touchstones included such powerhouse outfits as Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, and Cream (catch the snippet of “Sunshine of Your Love” in the midst of the almost 10-minute-long “Mr. Tall”). The CD is available now at Streetheart gigs as well as online, and can be downloaded worldwide from digital retailers like iTunes and Amazon, as well as streaming services such as Rdio, Beats Music and Spotify.

Based in Edmonton at the time, longtime musical collaborators Dean and Frenette were playing in a local cover band, Great Canadian River Race, when they heard about a group from Saskatchewan playing a bar in town. Dean says he and Frenette were impressed, to say the least. Soon after, they found themselves in Regina with Shields and Gutheil, and a year later they recorded their only album, Meanwhile Back in Paris. Dean was replaced in the group shortly thereafter, and eventually joined up with vocalist Mike Reno to form Loverboy, along with bassist Jim Clench (soon to be replaced by the late Scott Smith) and keyboardist Doug Johnson, with Frenette coming aboard soon afterward. “Spider,” who went on to play with Tom Cochrane’s Red Rider, rejoined his ex-Streetheart mates in 2001, after the tragic death of Smith.
Streetheart went on to receive a Juno Award, two Ampex Golden Reel Awards and were voted the most popular Canadian act at the People’s Choice Awards. During the course of their career, they toured with fellow Canucks Chilliwack, Rush, Aldo Nova and April Wine, as well as Sammy Hagar, Styx, Kansas, Blue Oyster Cult and AC/DC.

“I thought we were a great band,” says Dean. “We definitely had dynamics and communication on stage, and it took a live album to showcase that. Yeah, I was pretty distraught when I got kicked out – that was a heavy period in my life, but I got over it. I survived. And now I think I can speak for Matt and Spider – it wouldn’t take much convincing for us to do a tour one day. We’re totally appreciative of all our Streetheart and Loverboy fans. Personally, it blows me away that people are still behind us as much as they are, and I’m excited we can finally offer them something like this in return.”

Queensryche Ownership Battle Finally Comes To A Conclusion

Scorpions Drummer Sent Jailed In Dubai For Insulting IslamNearly two years after Queensryche fired Geoff Tate, the lawsuit between the singer and his former bandmates has come to an end. According to terms of the settlement Queensrcyhe will continue with singer Todd LaRorre, while Tate will be unable to continue under the Queensryche banner.

“We wanted to let Queensryche fans around the world know that an amicable settlement has been reached between Eddie Jackson, Scott Rockenfield, Michael Wilton and Geoff Tate with regard to the future of the Queensryche name,” said the participants in the lawsuit through a joint statement. “According to the agreement, original Queensryche members Eddie Jackson, Scott Rockenfield and Michael Wilton along with recent members, Todd LaTorre and Parker Lundgren, will now be the sole entity recording and touring as Queensryche, performing selections from their entire musical catalog that spans over 30 years of material. Original Queensryche lead singer Geoff Tate will continue to record, perform and pursue a variety of other creative endeavors and, as part of the agreement, will have the exclusive rights to perform ‘Operation: Mindcrime I’ and ‘II’ in their entirety as a unique performance. Both sides wish each other well and are excited about what the future holds. We want to thank the fans for standing beside us through this ordeal and look forward to sharing our music with you for years to come.”

“I think it’s great. I’m very happy that it’s over and done and we can all move on with our lives,” Tate told Billboard regarding the lawsuit’s conclusion. “It’s been a long, bitter two years, I’ll tell you. I’m glad it’s over.”

“We’ve been trying to work something out for months and months and months, and it’s like any kind of lawsuit, it’s just slow going,” Tate continued. “But finally I think the realization that going to court over the whole thing was going to be a huge nightmare and huge financial mess for everybody that [we] really started to look at it more seriously and realistically. It’s pretty similar to the Pink Floyd settlement where one group got the name and Roger Waters got “The Wall.” It’s very similar to that. I retain “Operation: Mindcrime” and everything revolving around that, and they got the name, so it’s a win-win for everybody.”

Immediately after the settlement Tate announced he would be performing his farewell tour as ‘Queensryche’ beginning in late July. For the forthcoming tour, Tate’s version of Queensryche will be performing all the hits along with some rarities to celebrate the music he’s enjoyed making over the past thirty years. Although the name will change, the line-up of stellar musicians performing with tate after this ‘farewell’ tour is expected to remain the same.

Tate explained that he is allowed to tour under the Queensryche banner one last time. “We’re both allowed to do all of our pre-contracted dates as they were advertised, so once those dates are over then it all changes. I think my last date as Queensryche is September 1, August 31, something like that.”

“I’m just really happy to be done with it all, and I think the other side is probably happy as well so we can turn the tide in this episode in our lives and move on to nicer things,” concluded Tate. “The whole experience was such a betrayal and so negative that I’m really ready to get past it, not think about it anymore, and it doesn’t really bear looking back on in my mind right now. That’s the last thing I want to do is think about it some more. I think just, I’m ready to move on and do something different. And this is a great launching point to do that from, and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Helix Stream New Song From Upcoming Album ‘Bastard Of the Blues’

Helix’s new studio album ‘Bastard Of The Blues’ will be released on May 4th through Perris Records, and the Canadian rockers are streaming the title track online. The CD is a digi-pack with a 16 page insert containing individual band member shots and lyrics, and is available for pre-order directly from the band at www.planethelix.com

“The new CD ‘Bastard Of The Blues’ is officially being released next Sunday with a kick off release party here at Planet Helix,” said Helix frontman Brian Vollmer. “These are usually intimate affairs with close friends that include a barbecue out back and a general co-mingling of the masses. We’re hoping to have the CD and t-shirts for sale that day. I always look at what we sell at the release party as “seeding” — in other words getting the CD out into the marketplace and from there word of mouth about the quality of the tunes doing the rest. I’ll also be releasing the first single “Bastard of the Blues” to Canadian radio through DMDS, the digital service that sends the song to select radio stations across Canada. The song arrives by email to each station’s music/program director, and from there they can decide to listen to it, download it, or add it to their playlist. The song itself is long, running over 5 minutes, which will probably prevent it from getting airplay in some markets. However, it’s my favorite song from the disc, so I’m going with my heart and gut on this one. The two obvious singles after that are Even Jesus (Wasn’t Loved in His Home Town) and Winning Is The Best Revenge. I’m undecided as to what to release as the second song. By the time I get around to making a decision the CD will have been out for over a month, so I’ll be listening to fan feedback and then making a move. Brent Doerner, who now does all my videos, is ready to eventually do videos for both, so eventually they’ll both come out anyway.”

‘Bastard Of The Blues’, the follow-up to 2009’s ‘Vegabond Bones’ and the band’s 13th full-length studio album, features guest appearance by former Slik Toxik frontman Nick Walsh and guitarist Sean Kelly. The current version of Helix consists of Vollmer, guitarists Kaleb Duck and Chris Julke, and long time band members Daryl Gray (bass) and Greg Fritz Hinz (drums).

Scorpions Drummer Jailed In Dubai For Insulting Islam

Scorpions Drummer Jailed In Dubai For Insulting IslamJames Kottak of the Scorpions was sentenced to a month in jail for insulting Islam and lifting his middle finger at Muslims at an airport, reports The National

Kottak, 51, the American drummer for the German band whose hits include “Rock You Like a Hurricane”, said he drank five glasses of wine on a flight from Moscow to Dubai. He was in transit to Bahrain to perform at the country’s Formula One grand prix on April 3. However due to his arrest, Kottak did not perform that show with the Scorpions and was replaced by Mark Cross.

He said he and a friend had taken a wrong turn and entered the transit hall. Kottak was arrested for being drunk and became angry, witnesses said. They said he started swearing and talking about “non-educated Muslims”, then flashed his middle finger at Pakistani passengers. Police said he also exposed his behind.

Kottak, who pleaded not guilty to insulting Islam and raising his middle finger, was also fined Dh2,000 for drinking without a licence, to which he pleaded guilty. He has been held since April 3, and will be released soon because of the time served.

A policeman said he heard Kottak say, “What is this disgusting smell?” before he insulted Islam. “I didn’t see anything else but I heard him. I then informed my supervisor, who came and took the defendant away.” A?customer service employee at the airport said, “When he saw the Pakistani and Afghan passengers, he covered his nose and said that there was no way he will travel with them.” He added that the drummer then started swearing repeatedly at the arrivals area of Terminal 2. “He wasn’t talking to a person specifically but was talking in general. He was very nervous at the time and talking loudly.”

A Jordanian passenger services agent said Kottak came over to her and was talking loudly. She said, “He was shouting ‘non-educated Muslims’ then he went to the office of the head and flashed his middle finger at the passengers.”

Police said in records that when he lowered his trousers he was asking people to touch his behind. “I don’t remember saying these words and I did not flash my middle finger,” Kottak said to prosecutors. When asked about taking down his trousers he said, “this is not true — I just lifted my shirt up to show the tattoo on my back” as a “spontaneous act”. “There is no way that I would say such a phrase about Muslims, whether I was drunk or not,” he told police. “I confess to drinking alcohol but I refuse the other two charges, I did not do them.”

At Dubai Court of Misdemeanours yesterday, his lawyer said his client was innocent and the witnesses must have been misunderstood. “Their testimonies are contradictory, your honour,” said Hamid Al Khazraji.

SPV/STEAMHAMMER IS PROUD TO RELEASE THE NEW ACE FREHLEY ALBUM IN EUROPE:
2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Ace Frehley will release Space Invader, his first new solo album in five years, via SPV/Steamhammer in Europe on July 07. The album will include nine brand new original songs as well as a cover of Steve Miller’s “The Joker.”
Frehley has released an official statement surrounding his new studio album: “Life on Earth has been very good to me, and the body of work I’ve created over the years has withstood the test of time. Today I see no obstacles before me and my creativity has never been more fine tuned. Growing up in an Alien world has enhanced my senses and allowed me to succeed where others would have failed. The best is yet to come!”

Widely known as the original “Space Ace” and founding guitarist for 16 cumulative years (over 2 tenures) of the multi-platinum selling rock band Kiss, Frehley is demonstrably the most popular original member. In addition to having the best-selling solo album career (vintage or current) among the original foursome, Frehley’s self-titled Ace Frehley, released in 1978, went on to sell over one million copies, producing the only Top 40 single, “New York Groove,”ќ from any of the legendary Kiss solo albums; (peaking at #13). The massive hit was most recently featured in an episode of cult show “Entourage”ќ and was also KISS’ second bestselling download in 2012, besting such KISS Army anthems as “I Was Made For Lovin’ You,”ќ “Beth”ќ and “Calling Dr. Love”ќ even after 36 years.
Since departing from KISS, Frehley went on to release four more solo albums and one live EP including his most recent effort, Anomaly in 2009, which received a welcoming response among critics. “‘Anomaly’ shows why many rock and metal guitarists list “Space Ace’ as a prime six-string influence,” said Rolling Stone.

VAN HALEN SOPHOMORE EFFORT DANCES ONTO RADIO 35 YEARS AGO:
Dallas, TX – April 29, 2014. North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History’s Greatest Rock Bands celebrates the 35th anniversary of Van Halen II with a look back at four formative Van Halen albums.
The quintessential American hard rock band Van Halen’s 1978 debut all but guaranteed their election to the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame on the first ballot, quickly becoming a benchmark for every hard rock band ever since. Six years later they even topped that with 1984, one of the most popular and influential albums ever. Every one of the four Van Halen albums in between, II, Women and Children First, Fair Warning and Diver Down would all sell millions and each would top its predecessor on the album sales chart.
These early years, although undeniably successful, came with a price, and by 1982 Van Halen had become a series of contradictions: even though selling a million each on Van Halen II and its successors, as well as hundreds of thousands of concert tickets, their record label was concerned over a lack of mainstream hits and a shallow well of songs. Creative frustration along with personal conflicts within the band would eventually lead to a post-David Lee Roth Van Halen.

Alex Van Halen describes to InTheStudio host Redbeard how visceral and primal their creative process was on those formative albums. “When we’re in the studio and the amps are cranked to eleven on the dial and you’re having a great time playing it, I think that’s the one thing you shouldn’t forget. We’ve been looking at songs, how do we write them, how do we come up with the ideas, but once we start playing, it’s a perpetual thing.”
Van Halen II /InTheStudio interview is available now to stream at: www.inthestudio.net/redbeards-blog/van-halen-2-35th-anniversary/

GEOFF TATE TO EMBARK ON FAREWELL QUEENSRYCHE TOUR BEGINNING IN JULY:
More than thirty years after setting forth on the musical journey that would become known as Queensryche, singer Geoff Tate — one of rock’s quintessential front men and the lead vocalist heard on all Queensryche hits — will be performing his farewell tour as “Queensryche” beginning in late July (see below for full itinerary).
The announcement of the tour, Queensryche Starring Geoff Tate – The Farewell Tour, comes hot on the heels of the recent amicable settlement with his former band mates Michael Wilton, Eddie Jackson and Scott Rockenfield, who will be continuing with the band name.
With Geoff at the helm of Queensryche, the band experienced incredible success, garnering four Grammy nominations, performing in 46 different countries and selling over 20 million albums worldwide.

“One thing that’s really important for fans to know is that this never went to court,” comments Geoff Tate, who will be continuing as Geoff Tate: The Voice of Queensryche once the summer farewell tour is complete.
As part of the agreement between the original members, Geoff will have the exclusive right to perform the concept albums Operation: Mindcrime and Operation: Mindcrime II as unique performances.

For the past several months, Geoff and his version of Queensryche (comprised of bassist Rudy Sarzo, guitarist Robert Sarzo, guitarist Kelly Gray, drummer Simon Wright and keyboardist Randy Gane) have been performing the fan favorite on their 25th Anniversary Mindcrime Tour (with special guest Sass Jordan as “Sister Mary”) in front of sold out audiences everywhere.
“It’s sort of similar to the Pink Floyd situation where Roger Waters retained The Wall,” comments Geoff. “Mindcrime was my thing and my story, so it’s only appropriate that I keep that… The others will be touring as Queensryche and I’ll be continuing on as me.”

The popularity of the theatrical back-to-back presentation of the Operation: Mindcrime saga (I & II) was exemplified when the performance was captured for the 2007 double DVD/CD set, Mindcrime at the Moore, that hit #1 on Billboard’s Top Music DVD Chart and eventually reached gold status.
For the forthcoming tour, Geoff’s version of Queensryche will be performing all the hits along with some rarities to celebrate the music he’s enjoyed making over the past thirty years.
Although the name will change, the line-up of stellar musicians performing with Geoff after this “farewell” tour is expected to remain the same.
Tickets go on sale for the majority of shows this Friday, May 2nd and this Saturday, May 3rd.
Please visit www.queensryche.comwww.facebook.com/GeoffTateOfficial and www.twitter.com/GeoffTate.

JAMES KOTTAK ON THE WRONG SIDE OF UAE AUTHORITIES:
From: www.billboard.com/articles/news/6070318/james-kottak-arrested-scorpions-drummer-jailed-in-dubai.
Newspapers in the United Arab Emirates are reporting that the American drummer for the rock band Scorpions has been sentenced to one month in jail after being convicted of offensive behavior in Dubai.
The government-backed National newspaper reported Tuesday that James Kottak was convicted of insulting Islam, raising his middle finger and being under the influence of alcohol while in transit at Dubai airport. The reports allege Kottak was heard ranting about “non-educated Muslims” and that he covered his nose when he saw Pakistani and Afghan passengers nearby. He also reportedly pulled his pants down.
The Gulf News daily says he was arrested April 3 en route from Russia to Bahrain, where the German band was scheduled to perform at a Formula One race. Kottak was a no-show at the April 5 concert. The newspapers say Kottak admitted to drinking but denied other charges.
“There is no way that I would say such a phrase about Muslims, whether I was drunk or not,” he reportedly told police. “I confess to drinking alcohol but I refuse the other two charges, I did not do them.”
The Scorpions’ manager didn’t respond to requests for comment. Kottak’s local lawyer couldn’t immediately be reached. Kottak joined the Scorpions in 1996.
