IMPRESSIVE L.A. NEWCOMERS X-DRIVE TO RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM GET YOUR ROCK ON ON FRONTIERS:
Frontiers Records is pleased to announce the release of X-Drive’s debut album entitled “Get Your Rock On” on August 22 in Europe and August 26 in North America.
X-Drive is a new band centered around guitar player Jeremy Brunner, an Oregon transplant, who – on the heels of his songwriting skills managed to put together an impressive debut with an affinity for catchy riffs, insightful lyrics and huge choruses.
Some of the best in Los Angeles have joined the ranks of X-DRIVE, including bassist James Lomenzo (White Lion, Megadeth, Black Label Society), singer Keith St. John (Burning Rain, Lynch Mob, Montrose) and to round out the project hard-hitting drummer Fred Fischerfrom Midline. Then legendary producer Andy Johns, the former Led Zeppelin engineer, was able to finish the X-DRIVE tracks just before his tragic death in 2013.

“It was such a pleasure to contribute to Jeremy’s effort! He has written and crafted an incredible homage to the style of 80’s rock, a style that I cut my teeth on back in the day,” Lomenzo said. “His love for the era and style really comes through in a surprisingly satisfying way.”
“Writing with Brunner was an absolute pleasure,” St. John said. “On the whole, the vehicle for his musical canvasses has been a breath of fresh air in directness and simplicity. I found myself patently inspired to fashion my parts for this collection of songs that was Jeremy’s own refreshing take on the ’80s.”
“Get Your Rock On” was mixed by Wyn Davis (Black Sabbath, Dio, Whitesnake, Dokken), and it took more than a year in the studio to make things just the way Brunner wanted, as the guitarist is a bit of a mastermind perfectionist. But it was definitely worth the wait! The X-DRIVE debut positively rocks from beginning to end.

“Get Your Rock On” will include the following tracklisting: Love’s A Bitch; Get Your Rock On; Steppin’ On The Rock; Baby Bye Bye; California; Lay Me Down; Turn The Noize Down; Beyond the Angels; Rattlesnake Eyes; Just Can’t Stay; Change of Heart; Love Breaks the Fool.

RUSH’S LEGENDARY ‘PRESTO’ ALBUM TO BE RELEASED AS HYBRID SACD:
Camarillo, CA – Rush fans rejoice! Marshall Blonstein’s Audio Fidelity will be reissuing Rush’s legendary ‘Presto’ album on limited numbered edition Hybrid SACD! Rush were never a band known to play the same sort of thing for any extended period, they often pushed the boundaries of rock and their formidable list of albums helped to bring prog to a wider audience. By 1989 a change was inevitable and with their 13th studio album, ‘Presto’, it was a change for the good. ‘Presto’ marked the beginning of a transition period, moving away from a sound dominated by synthesizers and toward more traditional rock instrumentation. The synths were toned back while the guitars were brought up to a reasonable level allowing the emphasis to return to the rhythm instruments, resurrecting the groove that Rush maintains so very well.
“A creative rebirth – producing a groove that’s positively infectious.”

Geddy Lee and Neal Peart are in good form, but Alex Lifeson is the real story, he can be heard in grand force and even pulls out the acoustic guitar. Lifeson’s leads in “Superconductor” are brilliant, Geddy Lee does great solo work on “Show Don’t Tell” and Peart’s percussion on “Scars” features a complex tribal rhythm drum pattern in which both acoustic and electronic drums are utilized – a synthesis of the two that’s accessible without compromising. Each of these tracks, along with? “The Pass,”? reached the top of the Album Rock Tracks charts with “Show Don’t Tell” hitting #1. ‘Presto’ climbed to #16 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart.
Rush made a stab at greatness with ‘Presto’ and Rupert Hine’s deft production had much to do with its success.

Tracks: 1. Show Don’t Tell 2. Chain Lightning 3. The Pass 4. War Paint 5. Scars 6. Presto 7. Superconductor 8. Anagram (for Mongo) 9. Red Tide 10. Hand Over Fist 11. Available Light.
Produced by Rupert Hine Mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio

NEW REVIEWS ONLINE:
New Reviews added to the site today – the LAST batch before the launch of the new MR website!
Online today are reviews for: California Breed, Neal Schon, Timo Tolkki, Seven, Diesel, SunStrike, Mother Road, Alien, Dynazty and Brother FiretribeCheck them out now.

Today’s reviews reflect a few things. First – there’s a lot of great releases around. Plenty to pick and choose from for all!
Secondly, with the development of the new MR website, I haven’t had much time to devote to reviews as is needed, so what I’m reviewing right now are the main titles around right now – and as far as those – they are mostly very consistent and of high quality. The ratings have been high all year – because of the quality with mainline releases and the fact I haven’t had time to get to the secondary releases which may not obtain such high praise and help average out the scores, but equally deserving of coverage.

Which leads to my final point – the increased consistency and quality of releases is leading the reviews to tend higher and if I keep going we’ll need a 110 rating soon enough.

So with today’s reviews, say goodbye to the old MR site and stand by for the new. The new design allows me a whole lot more flexibility to add reviews one at a time, instead of painfully working up a batch and HTML’ing them to add in one go. That means more reviews, less constraints over what titles and the length of reviews (long if I want, short if I want…) and a slight tweak to the ratings system.

I have grappled with this for months, but decided that to do anything completely different would throw 16 years of past reviews into disarray, so the % system will stay and I’ll continue to talk about the details within each release in as much detail as necessary, but at the same time, there is one additional rank being added within the current 0-100 system, plus I have tweaked the descriptions each color rank uses. On top of that, you can expect me to be tougher on scores and a general depreciation in overall marks (just slightly), as this will allow greater scope to point out truly outstanding releases, focus on the good records and allow room to grow once again.

80 is the new 90 🙂

I’m looking forward to getting the new site launched….I hope the new layout and system makes sense and is as popular as the reviews here have been over the years. Once the new site is launched I will begin the slow process of cataloguing all past years’ worth of reviews into one mega-searchable database at the new site!
Thanks for the support and awesome feedback over that time.

BRITISH MELODIC ROCKERS SERPENTINE RETURN:
Press Release: “We are delighted to announce that after twelve months in the proverbial wilderness, Serpentine are back!
After parting ways with our former singer Matt Black last year, and with our beloved bassist and founder member Gareth Vanstone bowing out in early 2014 due to health issues, it is with extreme pleasure that we welcome two new recruits to the band who represent the cream of the South Wales rock scene. Vocal powerhouse Adam Payne (ex-Tidal) was identified almost immediately upon Matt’s departure as the voice to represent the new era of Serpentine, and is joined by bassist Owen Crawford whose work on former band Triaxis’ ‘Rage & Retribution’ album is beyond impressive.
You may have gathered by now from our Facebook posts that work in the studio on our yet-to-be-titled third record, which is being produced and co-written by Gary Hughes (Ten), is well underway. The sessions so far have been great and we are more than confident that the songs we’ve chosen represent our best work to date. With that in mind, we are also very excited and honoured to have landed the services of Neil Kernon (Queensryche, FM, Judas Priest, Autograph) to mix the album this summer, which promises to have a harder and darker edge than previous releases.
More details will be available in a full press release, which will be out at the beginning of next week. In the meantime we hope that you will all join us in welcoming two class acts into Serpentine. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your continued support while we’ve been away. Now we’re back, and you’re gonna know about it!!”

PAUL DEAN’S PRE-LOVERBOY BAND STREETHEART RELEASES 1993 LIVE REUNION ALBUM:
One Night One Take features Dean, Matt Frenette and Ken “Spider” Sinnaeve reuniting with Kenny Shields and Daryl Gutheil

New York, May 23, 2014–Long before they became full-time members of Loverboy, guitarist Paul Dean, bassist Ken “Spider” Sinnaeve and drummer Matt Frenette were members of another legendary Canadian band, Streetheart. Long gathering dust in Dean’s archives, One Night One Take finally sees the light of day, a live recording made at Winnipeg’s Rolling Stone Cabaret on Friday, August 13, 1993, part of a week-long stint marking the band’s reunion after Dean was “dumped” 15 years before.

One Night, One Take shows off a band where chops, musicianship and communication resulted in an almost 14-minute-long cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Under My Thumb” and a fiery version of Them’s Bert Berns-penned classic, “Here Comes the Night,” both spotlighting Dean’s intense guitar-playing. Sinnaeve’s virtuoso bass and Frenette’s frenetic drumming are showcased on one of the previously unreleased tracks, “Mr. Tall”, while the other new track, “Losin’ Streak”, features vocalist Kenny Shields and keyboardist/vocalist Daryl Gutheil. Also, check out Dean’s electric violin solo on “Move On Over,” where Shields playfully dubs him Paul “Charlie Daniels” Dean, or his guitar pyrotechnics in “Can You Feel It” for further proof of Streetheart’s legendary jamming prowess. “At rehearsal, I said to myself, how the heck am I gonna pull that off – did I actually play that?” laughs Dean today. Their musical touchstones included such powerhouse outfits as Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, and Cream (catch the snippet of “Sunshine of Your Love” in the midst of the almost 10-minute-long “Mr. Tall”). The CD is available now at Streetheart gigs as well as online, and can be downloaded worldwide from digital retailers like iTunes and Amazon, as well as streaming services such as Rdio, Beats Music and Spotify.

Based in Edmonton at the time, longtime musical collaborators Dean and Frenette were playing in a local cover band, Great Canadian River Race, when they heard about a group from Saskatchewan playing a bar in town. Dean says he and Frenette were impressed, to say the least. Soon after, they found themselves in Regina with Shields and Gutheil, and a year later they recorded their only album, Meanwhile Back in Paris. Dean was replaced in the group shortly thereafter, and eventually joined up with vocalist Mike Reno to form Loverboy, along with bassist Jim Clench (soon to be replaced by the late Scott Smith) and keyboardist Doug Johnson, with Frenette coming aboard soon afterward. “Spider,” who went on to play with Tom Cochrane’s Red Rider, rejoined his ex-Streetheart mates in 2001, after the tragic death of Smith.
Streetheart went on to receive a Juno Award, two Ampex Golden Reel Awards and were voted the most popular Canadian act at the People’s Choice Awards. During the course of their career, they toured with fellow Canucks Chilliwack, Rush, Aldo Nova and April Wine, as well as Sammy Hagar, Styx, Kansas, Blue Oyster Cult and AC/DC.

“I thought we were a great band,” says Dean. “We definitely had dynamics and communication on stage, and it took a live album to showcase that. Yeah, I was pretty distraught when I got kicked out – that was a heavy period in my life, but I got over it. I survived. And now I think I can speak for Matt and Spider – it wouldn’t take much convincing for us to do a tour one day. We’re totally appreciative of all our Streetheart and Loverboy fans. Personally, it blows me away that people are still behind us as much as they are, and I’m excited we can finally offer them something like this in return.”

“My bags are packed and I’m ready to go; plane ticket to the UK…. check, Acoustic guitar…check, money for beer. Check, EM/MR. BIG fan’s?” he said “Anywhere, everywhere, up and over, sideways, down… there’s no place I’d rather Rock than with you in the UK.”ќ
In 1985 and 1987 Eric released “Eric Martin”ќ and “I’m only fooling myself”ќ solo efforts, which are lathered with Eric’s signature soulful voice and candid lyrics.
In 1988-89, Eric would team up with Billy Sheehan, Pat Torpey and Paul Gilbert to form Mr. Big. They would enjoy enormous success with the release of 6 studio albums, numerous hit singles and 6 top-selling live cd’s. All combined, worldwide sales top the 7 million mark. Eric’s third solo album, “Somewhere in the middle”ќ was written during the two-year hiatus from Mr. Big and released in 1998 in Asia and Europe. During the summer of 2001, Eric and the rest of the Mr. Big guys released their last effort, “Actual Size.”ќ In between promoting and preparing for Mr. Big’s 2002 “Farewell Tour”ќ, Eric continued to record songs for his fourth solo cd. He promised a return to his “rawk roots”ќ and he definitely did so with the album, “I’m Goin’ Sane”ќ which gathered excellent critics and was released in Asia, Europe and The US in late 2002. After the success of a Japan tour, a European “Gods Festival”ќ and a 23 city US tour, Eric decided to go back into the studio to record “Pure,”ќ a EP that covers his hits in an unplugged and stripped acoustic form.
In early 2004 brought Eric back into the studio to record “Destroy All Monsters”ќ which would be released in Japan, Europe, The US and the most recent, South America. The album sound is something Eric calls “Distorted Pop”ќ with a focus on his rock roots. In 2008 Eric joined forces with an all-star group including Mark Slaughter, The Nelson Brothers, Jack Blades and Kelly Keagy to form the supergroup, Scrap Metal. Scrap Metal plays shows whenever each guy has some time off of their individual careers.
Mr. Big regrouped with all original members for a worldwide reunion tour in 2009. They had so much fun that they decided to release a new album. “What If”ќ dropped in 2010 and reviewers raved about the 4 members creating their original sound with a current feel. The guys set out on another world tour and are currently writing for their next album.
Moving to more recent times, in 2012, one of the largest rock operas in the world contacted Eric to be featured on their new album. Avantasia is a German based rock opera born to Edguy front man, Tobias Sammet. Eric traveled for six months with Avantasia covering Asia, Europe, South America and Canada. Eric has been asked to join the band for their next tour starting at the infamous Waken open-air festival in front of 80,000 concert goers this summer.
“Keep Calm & Unplug your TV set, your kids, the bullshit.. Don’t let life get in the way, EM unplugged in the UK in December….See you then!”

July 11, 2014 will see Axel Rudi Pell celebrate his 25th Anniversary as a solo artist by performing a very special show at the prestigious Bang Your Head Festival, in Balingen, Germany.
Today Axel reveals all the secrets:

“This year we are celebrating the 25th Anniversary of my solo career, my first solo album Wild Obsession came out in 1989. Therefore, we will play a very special and unique Show at the Bang Your Head!!!ќ Festival in Balingen, Germany, on July 11th to celebrate this and we will headline the festival on that day!
This will be no regular show by far! Of course we will play a lot of songs with the recent AXEL RUDI PELL line-up featuring Johnny Gioeli, Bobby Rondinelli, Ferdy Doernberg, Volker Krawczak and myself, but this will only be 1/3 of the complete show approx… As this year also sees the 30th Recording Anniversary of my former band Steeler (the first record was released in 1984), we will reunite in the original Line-Ups (Peter Burtz, Tom Eder, Jan Yildiral and both Bassplayers Roland Hag and Volker Krawczak) to perform a couple of songs for you. The reunion will only happen on that day and it will be an exclusive one-off!
Furthermore we will have a few ARP vintage members there and we’re proud to announce that both Vocalists Rob Rock and Jeff Scott Soto among original Drummer Joerg Michael will enter the stage too to play a few older ARP tracks!
As this ain’t enough … Lol…, I invited some other musical guests and friends to play a few cover tracks together and I’m really proud to announce the following guests in no particular order:

Graham Bonnet (ex- Rainbow, -MSG, -Alcatrazz), Joe Lynn Turner (ex- Rainbow, -Deep Purple, -Yngwie Malmsteen) Doogie White (ex- Rainbow, -Yngwie Malmsteen, Michael Schenker’s Temple Of Rock) John Lawton (ex- Uriah Heep, -Lucifers Friend), Tony Carey (ex- Rainbow), Vinny Appice (ex- Black Sabbath, -Heaven & Hell, -DIO).
Be there at this very very special Show, which will be a lifetime event and will last for more than 3 hours. Have fun!”

RUBICON CROSS UNVEIL NEW VIDEO FOR “BLEED WITH ME”:
The majority of hard rock bands that manage to break through to the masses do so with a killer video clip. And Rubicon Cross has a worthy one on their hands with Bleed with Me, off their fast-rising self-titled album, of which a “deluxe edition” will be available for purchase on May 19th exclusively through BestBuy (which comes with a poster and bonus tracks): www.bestbuy.com/site/rubicon-cross-deluxe-only–best-buy-with-bonus-tracks-poster-cd.

Shot in Racine, WI, the band (which is comprised of CJ Snare/vocals, Chris Green/lead guitars, Jeff Lerman/second guitar, Simon Farmery/bass, and Robert Behnke/drums), had this to say about the video shoot – “I can’t believe we did it! The “‘Bleed with Me’ video seemed jinxed at every turn. We had about five venues cancel on us before a friend [Brett Ihde – director of sales at Magnificent Events] came through with the abandoned warehouse less than two days before we started shooting. What we accomplished in 48 hours made us wonder how bands even use to spend $300,000 on a video. Thanks to friends and colleagues, we came up with a video we’re incredibly proud of, and the help we received only reinforced the message of the song, when you have a band of brothers, anything is possible!”

And according to the band, other highlights of the shoot included:
–The amount of red brick dust in the factory coated every bit of our equipment.
–Behnke’s drums were shot in a service elevator.
–The lighting was created by volunteers waving lights above the drums.
–Simon the bass player refused to go in a room with spiders so was shot in a hallway.
–The band shot a “Hello Cleveland” tribute to Spinal Tap that day, soon to be released.
–CJ’s flight was so held up in traffic that the band had shot the drum AND bass shots already by the time he got there.
–Expecting nothing, Brett Ihde had laid on full catering including, sandwiches, cold meat buffet, chips, candy, large bottle of Jager, vodka, Jack, crate of Guinness and crate of lager (these got consumed during the process of the video).
–Band started drinking at 11am.

SHAKRA NEED A VOCALIST:
Swiss rockers Shakra are without a vocalist. Tis from the band: John leaves Shakra! We are saddened by the fact that John has decided to leave us. We are losing an incredibly great singer and band member. With his loveable, quiet character, he has given us much pleasure during the past four years. We unfortunately have to accept his decision, and wish him well for his future! Now, we’re forced to search for a new singer… You singers out there, get in touch with us if you wanna commence a new era! Thom, Thomas, Roger, Dominik.

Statement by John: “After many sleepless nights, I realized that SHAKRA is no longer priority No.1 in my life. With mixed feelings I remain today. I’m gonna miss my band members and the whole crew a lot, but I’m also looking forward to what’s coming after my time as a Rock singer. If and how I’m gonna make music in the future has not yet been dediced.”

SUPER DUPER DVD DUE:
New York, NY (May 15, 2014)–Eagle Rock Entertainment is proud to announce the DVD, Blu-ray and Deluxe Limited Edition Boxed set release of the critically acclaimed Banger Films documentary Super Duper Alice Cooper on June 3 [MSRP $14.98 DVD, $19.98 Blu-ray, $69.98 Deluxe Edition].
Premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival this past April, Super Duper Alice Cooper is the first ever “doc opera” film, presented with a dizzying blend of documentary archive footage, animation, and rock opera. The film was also screened in theatres nationally in late April.

Super Duper Alice Cooper is the twisted tale of a teenage Dr. Jekyll whose rock n’ roll Mr. Hyde almost kills him. It is the story of Vincent Furnier, a preacher’s son who struck fear into the hearts of parents as Alice Cooper, the ultimate rock star of the bizarre. From the advent of Alice as front man for a group of Phoenix freaks in the 60’s to the hazy decadence of celebrity in the 70s to his triumphant comeback as 80s glam metal godfather, we will watch as Alice and Vincent battle for each other’s’ souls. Alice’s story is told not only by the man himself, but through exclusive interviews with members of the original Alice Cooper band, Elton John, Iggy Pop, John Lydon, and Dee Snider.
Super Duper Alice Cooper is the creation of Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn at Banger Films, producers of Iron Maiden: Flight 666 (2009 SXSW Audience Choice Winner) and Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage (2010 Grammy-nominated and Tribeca Audience Choice Winner), and much-lauded filmmaker Reginald Harkema, winner of the TIFF Special Jury Prize for his film Monkey Warfare.
The 13th edition of the Tribeca Film Festival will take place from April 16 to April 27 at locations around New York City. For more information on Super Duper Alice Cooper, please visit www.SuperDuperAliceCooper.com or like the Facebook pagewww.facebook.com/superduperalicecooper.
