Hear Metallica Debut Full New Song ‘The Lords of Summer’ in Concert

As promised, Metallica debuted a brand-new song, ‘The Lords of Summer,’ during the first concert of their ‘Metallica by Request’ tour last night in Bogota, Columbia.

Video of the entire eight minute-plus riff-fest can be found above. As you can clearly hear, the group hasn’t turned into a dance or folk outfit in the five and a half years since their last proper studio album, 2008′s ‘Death Magnetic.’ Indeed, based on early impressions it seems this winding, shifting epic would fit on that album quite nicely. Oh, and thankfully there seems to be no ‘St. Anger‘-style ban on guitar solos in place.

Back in November, Metallica announced that they would let their fans vote on 17 of the 18 songs they’d play at each show on this tour. Based on last night, their choices seem to be right down the middle of the plate and pretty much surprise-free, with ‘Blackened,’ ‘Master of Puppets,’ ‘Welcome Home (Sanitarium),’ ‘Fuel,’ ‘The Unforgiven,’ ‘…And Justice for All,’ ‘Sad But True,’ ‘Fade to Black,’ ‘Orion,’ One,’ ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls,’ ‘Battery,’ ‘Nothing Else Matters’ (really, voters?), ‘Enter Sandman,’ ‘Creeping Death,’ ‘Ride the Lightning’ and ‘Seek & Destroy’ joining ‘Lords’ on the set list.
