The live set, compiled from the band’s set at the California Jam festival on April 6, 1974, captures Deep Purple at a couple of crucial moments — both in terms of who was in the band, as David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes had recently joined the lineup for the ‘Burn‘ album, and because of what went down on stage, where guitarist Ritchie Blackmore threw his gear in the audience and attacked a cameraman before a pyrotechnic malfunction exploded one of his amps.
The band ended up fleeing the stage by helicopter, but the festival was still hugely successful, and their set was commemorated in 2006, when ‘Live in California 74′ was initially released to the home video market. On April 1, just in time to celebrate California Jam’s 40th anniversary, it’ll arrive on CD and digital audio formats. This isn’t the only reissue Purple fans can expect to see in the coming months, either; in May, the band is putting out a deluxe expanded version of its ‘Made in Japan’ album.
